JR - French street artist. ~Jennifer Modica

I came across this French street artist named JR, who wishes to show the world its true face by pasting photos of the human face across massive canvases. This is his way to force us to see each other. He is a bit of an activist and remains semi-anonymous. He travels to dangerous places, befriends the peoples and recruits them as models and collaborators.

He uses a camera to capture the faces of people then with the help of a crew and the village people, he posts the faces on the side of homes, trains, bridges and buildings. They are extremely close shots of the peoples faces which capture the spirits of individuals who normally go unseen. He posts the images in areas they would not normally be seen (ex: Parisian thugs pasted up in bourgeois neighborhoods).

I find his most recent project very interesting, "Women Are Heroes," depicts women "dealing with the effects of war, poverty, violence, and oppression” from Rio de Janeiro, Phnom Penh, Delhi and several African cities. And his TED Prize wish opens an even wider lens on the world -- asking us all to turn the world inside out.
