I thought I would share an interview about Swoon today.
I think she has some good points about how her environment has influenced her work. You can see elements of city life along with the ocean in the artwork. I also liked how she has used other artists as resources such as Robert Rauschenberg. The concept behind collage and mixed media can be easily connected with collaborative/ community work. The work turns into something tangible and interactive. Culture is important to the work.
On the subject of visual elements, I think Swoon's work has a great use of negative and positive space. In the woodcut/linocut process of printmaking, the white area of the work is carved away and the left over area is printed. Just visualizing the figurative subject is hard. Swoon has an amazing vision ad style that I admire.
Watching the interview is interesting too. You can see how Swoon works on the piece. She really takes in the space as a whole: an installation. The layering of the works and the interaction between the subjects start to tell a story. Swoon is able to tell a story by bringing the subject into the space of the viewer. This is a nice quality I hope to bring into my work.
