1st postcard has arrived

Hello all,

So today, I received Jessica's postcard and was very excited to see it.  Here is a photo I took of it:

I was excited by how bold and confident the writing was and I love the use of materials, namely the post it notes.  In this piece, Jessica makes use of a very significant gestalt principle to create unity: repetition.  Repetition is quite possibly the easiest way of creating unity in a work of art.  Anytime an element is repeated, it creates a sensation that the repeating elements belong together.

I also love how the text in the piece becomes a texture, so each individual word is no longer as important as looking at the whole thing.

I hope to receive the other post cards in the coming days.  Also, please remember to post photographs of the postcards you receive on the blog, so we can all share in this experience together.

As for me, I have been skipping along working hard today.  The following photograph shows the etching studio at the Women's Studio Workshop, which is where I'm working.  There are 2 presses that I have been using, both of them are Charles Brand presses, which is the same company that made the presses we have on campus:

On the walls and tables, you can see some of the prints I have been making.

Here are a couple more pictures of the prints I have been working on:

I hope all of you have read through the new assignment, and as always, I look forward to your next blog contributions.  Please see the Swoon interview Jess posted, it is very good and informative.  Swoon is a very important up and coming contemporary artist.  Her work is currently being shown just about everywhere.  It is very exciting!

And now, I shall fall asleep.  Night.

Monika
