Dylan Peterson
Project #3
Redesigning Huntington Pier
For my art piece I am going to be redesigning an art piece in my local community of Huntington Beach. My idea is to have a symbolic structure for the community of the iconic surf city.  Huntington Beach is a tourist destination and is known to be the surf capitol of the world.  I would say 99 percent of its visitors actually don’t surf.  It’s just the main beach of Pacific Coast Highway that can handle crowds up to six hundred thousand at a time.  All of these people want a picture in front of the pier or of them down at the water, whatever it is they want to take away an experience from visiting Orange County’s most famous beach city.
I think the experience of visiting surf city should actually involve the reason of why that town is so popular today.  By introducing a piece of art that would interact with the public. It would be a artificial concrete wave from huntington beach pier on the south side of the pier with a surfboard placed right in the pocket of the barrel.  Allowing all visitors alike to step on board and see what it feels like to be under the lip of a wave.  I think it is a good idea because it would give Huntington Beach a true sense of surfing, recognition to the founders of the wave and a memorable piece of art that is available to the public.
The monument would look best at the front of the pier just off of PCH. It would draw in people wanting to jump up on that surfboard and show off their best surfing poses.  Allowing young children to imagine and families to come together. The estimated budget for this project would be around $60,000 dollars to be done properly.  There is a company that specializes in concrete moldings and designs they would follow my design and would be able to complete the project within 2 months during the winter season.  The materials would cost roughly $15 thousand dollars, the workers would then take $25 thousand and I would expect $ thousand for my art.  Half of my earnings would be donated to a surfing foundation to help protect beaches that are under the threat of modernization.

The community of Huntington Beach deserves the proper monument to showcase their town and its origins.  The wave would be a huge attraction and sign of respect to those who brave the ocean everyday.  Best of all anyone can ride this wave, its meant for fun and memories.
